I’m a tad bit late to be doing a Mother’s Day post, but I needed to spend the day with my actual mother first. xD But! Better late than never! I decided I would do a blog post by tributing a toku actress who doesn’t get talked about very much, yet has made numerous appearances in classic Super Sentai seasons: Rumi Watanabe. She is perhaps best known for her role as the Ring Priestess from Dairanger eps 17-22. But aside from that, she plays many minor roles, usually as a housewife/mother character. And well, I gotta say, I appreciate her contribution to Sentai from Flashman to Gaoranger!~ Below, I’m going to share the following appearances she’s made, based on my memory.
Rumi Watanabe’s first Sentai appearance was in Flashman 27, where she’s the mother of a boy, appearing in brief scenes, being assaulted by Mess.
Her next cameo was the infamous Liveman 31, where Junichi gets pregnant. She’s amongst the crowd of people observing the pregnant Junichi. Megumi eventually points out when “the baby is talking!” Watanabe is the first to question her, confused due to Junichi being a man.
I may have already missed a couple, but I do remember seeing her in Jetman 26 as one of the primitive women amongst all the other primitive people when Raita is sent back in time.
Watanabe appears in Zyuranger 46, as Dora Mirage’s human form.
She makes a couple appearances in Kakuranger. In ep 9, she appears as an irritated mother who lives next to the noisy Yokai, Dorotabou.
She then appears in Kakuranger 33 as one of the brainwashed citizens.
She appears in Ohranger 14 as the mother of a boy named Tsutomu. Her family owns a ramen shop.
She appears in Carranger 10 as one of the unfortunate housewives to get brainwashed by LL Onene with her special headbands, and forced to join her bicycle gang!
Her final appearance as far as I know is Gaoranger 8. She shows up as a woman who is pleased to see the Kakeru showing up after an absence.
